A geologically inspired double feature in collaboration with GeoMôn UNESCO Geopark.
“Understanding is love’s other name.”
Katia and Maurice Krafft loved two things — each other and volcanoes. For two decades, the daring French volcanologist couple roamed the planet, chasing eruptions and documenting their discoveries. Ultimately, they lost their lives in a 1991 volcanic explosion, leaving a legacy that forever enriched our knowledge of the natural world.
A short film by artists Mari Rose Pritchard and Julie Upmeyer as part of their ongoing artistic exploration of limestone, limestone quarries and their by-products.
‘Void Fraction - Archiving Conjecture’ is a performative installation and art film connecting the library at the Geological Society of London with Aber Quarry on Ynys Môn.
“Entangling ourselves with the structure of ‘the geological archive’, we installed our alternate card catalogue in the library at the Geological Society of London. The drawer contained 52 catalogue cards which corresponded to book-shaped ‘bookstones’ made from limestone offcuts. The stones were shelved throughout Society’s library, their shelf-marks corresponding to the library’s own book classification system, suggesting that perhaps stones themselves could be part of the collection.” - Mari Rose & Julie
In collaboration with GeoMôn UNESCO Geopark, join us for ‘Fire of Love’ a poetic and mesmerising documentary that chronicles the passionate lives of volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft as they risk everything—life, love, and limb—in pursuit of the world's most dangerous eruptions.
A double feature with ‘Void Fraction - Archiving Conjecture’ a short film reimagining geological archives by linking a quarry in Wales with the Geological Society’s library through a collection of limestone “bookstones” and an alternate card catalogue.
